No. 05 from Entomomancy

No. 05, from "Entomomancy" at WMG, June 29, 2007

Join me on June 29 from 6 - 9 p.m. at Woman Made Gallery, 685 N. Milwaukee, Chicago, for the opening of my new solo show "Entomomancy". I curated the group exhibition "Some Assembly Required" and Louise Pappageorge will also have a solo show at the gallery that night.

Entomo = prefix for insect
mancy = suffix for divination

think of throwing bones or runes, of reading tea leaves, of divining the future from an arrangement of objects - and arrangement of insects.

New

Ex-Libris
for a show curated by Joyce Owens at Chicago State University in August

There will be 4 of this same size in the show

I think the Cornell/Bowen project is coming out already.

One Medici, two Medici

Well since entering into this fantastic Cornell project with Kristy Bowen I have been sort of lost in the ether, collecting ideas.

I took a dozen or so postcard images of Cornell's work with us to Italy, and of course a few came shining through, especially upon travelling to Firenze, land of Medici.

We'll see where this leads...

A month in Italy...

Well, here's what happens when you go away for a month. Again. I've done this a lot lately. It's wonderful, but there are side effects.

1 - I can't understand nor speak English when I return home. Not that I speak Italian, so effectively I'm language-less for about a week, speaking only in grunts and spurts.

2 - The apartment is filthy. How does this much dust and dirt gather? It's a flipping convention in here. So clean, clean, clean which leads to...

3 - Bruises, cuts, scrapes. Not only do I lose language function I lose the motor skills to clean things.

4 - FEAR OF ART. This time I wasn't on a retreat or an art-making trip. It was a real vacation complete with lots of gelato and shopping. Now I'm peeking tentatively into the studio afraid to really go in. What if I forgot how? What if things and ideas refuse to cooperate and show up. Not that I have a lot of time for fear, I have 3 shows next month, one of them a solo show at Vespine.

But surprisingly I landed a great job while on vacation - I'm now the director for the 2006 Chicago Art Open. Wow...

5 - Disbelief.

This is the city where we stayed, Perugia (where they make Perugina chocolates....mmmmm)

Box of Books

I used to wonder what it was like to be an author, to get a whole box of books delivered to your house, fresh from the printer. It goes like this...a man in a hat calls you to arrange a time for delivery. That same man in a hat - in this case, publisher Wayne Allen Jones of Fractal Edge Press, arrives all smiles with a box of 300 Marriage Bones chapbooks.

Now I wonder what it's like to have multiple boxes of books sent from your publisher...I can't wait to find out.

And I hope the party on Sunday for this book is a hoot.

300 Marriage Bones in a box. Apparently marriage takes more bones than the human body...

Poems, poems, poems

Well...there will be a lot of poems circling around on Sunday. I hope lots of friends can make it...there will be wine but you'll only know that if you came here to the official blog spot on my site. ; )~

My goal is to, one day, be as prolific as Kristy Bowen. She, BTW, will be reading at WMG in July.

But for now, my first little chapbook, may it grow legs like these beetles, their bones on the outside.

Welcome to the Bugeyed Show

*Ahem*

Oh boy, these are my tender first steps into the world of blogging.

I want to use this space to goof off and post new buggy ideas and items. Like, for instance, this guy - Chalcosoma caucasus from the Cameron Highlands. He's about 3" long, with horns. Just like I like 'em!
